Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener made 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been tough. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
