New research suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users using these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to original weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It felt as if something flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Use is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
