United Nations Council Endorses Trump's Gaza Strip Proposal

The global body has approved a plan advanced by the US president for establishing a long-term stability in Gaza, encompassing the deployment of an global peacekeeping force and a potential avenue to a sovereign Palestinian state.

Unanimous Approval with Notable Abstentions

The proposal was adopted by a count of thirteen in favor, with both China and Russia declining to cast votes. The US envoy the American delegate addressed the council chamber that it mapped “a new course in the Middle East for Israelis and Palestinians and all the people of the region alike”.

Compromise Language on Palestinian Statehood

Incorporation of allusions to an sovereign Palestinian state was the price the US offered for endorsement from the Arab states, who are expected to provide peacekeepers for the global force.

“The transitional arrangements that we begin today must be implemented in adhering to international law and respecting Palestinian sovereignty,” James Kariuki declared.

Netanyahu's Resistance Persists

Nonetheless, on the verge of the council decision, PM the Israeli leader restated his administration's firm resistance to the creation of a sovereign Palestine, casting doubt on whether Israel will allow the execution of the Council-backed plan.

Key Provisions of the Resolution

  • Swift elimination of ongoing restrictions on assistance into the strip
  • Creation of an international stabilisation force
  • Progress on restoration and a possible “route to Palestinian sovereignty and sovereignty”

Vague Phrasing and Requirements

The mention to Palestinian statehood was a balanced insertion to an first US version which did not mention it. Yet the phrasing is unclear and conditional, promising only that once the PA has undergone changes and the restoration of the territory is progressing, “the conditions may eventually be in place for a feasible course to Palestinian independence and nationhood.”

International Reaction

The phrasing was insufficient of the definite pledge to the building of a sovereign Palestine alongside Israel sought by Muslim nations, as well as EU representatives, but in speeches to the chamber after the vote, delegates from those states said they were prepared to accept the agreement in the benefit of extending the current truce and immediate measures to assist and secure the millions of Palestinian people in the territory.

“We has ultimately decided to endorse of this resolution, a resolution that we support its primary aim, namely the maintenance of the truce and the formation of situations enabling the Palestinians to claim their immeasurable rights to sovereignty and sovereignty,” Amar Bendjama declared.

Implementation Challenges

The resolution provides overall oversight authority to a “peace board” headed by Trump, but of uncertain membership. The group has to report to the international body but it is not obligated by the desires of the United Nations or by the Palestinian leadership.

It also calls for the creation of a specialized Palestinian group that is tasked with overseeing day-to-day governance of the Gaza and the delivery of services, but it is highly uncertain who would participate.

Stabilisation Team Mission

The mission of the ISF authorizes it to remove and dissolve fighting factions in the territory, but it is highly uncertain that would-be troop contributors would agree to attempt to face such groups. Not a single nation has yet pledged to contributing forces.

Moreover the requirements for reform of the Palestinian Authority, the requirement towards moves to a sovereign Palestinian, have been unclear.

European officials said they considered it urgent that the members of the specialized group to provide utilities was agreed as without delay.
