Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's chief selector George Bailey has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming historic rivalry.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the prospects of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors involved, not just his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. With luck starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.
There is a track record of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the Ashes.
Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. How he handles the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
