Tetris Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

As any major prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition additional classifications to honor unsung work and satisfy the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games released every year without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
