Sheffield Wednesday Faces Serious Challenges, Says New Football Authority

'Our role is integral to football's future' - football oversight chief the new chairman

The Championship club's current difficulties represent a a "serious issue" and the football regulator is looking to gain the ability to look into club affairs in similar circumstances, the recently named head the regulator has declared.

Through a comprehensive talk, the regulator, who was named to the position this week, voiced concern towards supporters of the Owls.

Kogan met with four fan organizations representing the South Yorkshire club this week.

The football club have been struggling on and off the field in the current year, with the club failing to pay players on time on several different times, including in last month.

"Clearly Sheffield Wednesday has been a significant problem for EFL and a substantial concern for English football," the chairman stated.

"Wednesday stands as one of the iconic names for the English game and recently we have met Sheffield Wednesday supporters' groups.

"Our aim is to acquire the ability... which will enable us to take Sheffield Wednesday - and other clubs referred to us if they warrant scrutiny and addressed."

Economic Challenges and Proprietorship Status

The club's controversial proprietor the Thai businessman indicated in the summer he would be willing to sell up at the stadium, but he has been unable to finalize an agreement with prospective buyers.

Missed wage deadlines on time in earlier this year led to sanctions by the English Football League (EFL) in summer, blocking the team from conducting any transfers or loans for the following recruitment periods, although that restriction was lifted in late summer.

Official's Viewpoint

The chairman stated: "The position was created for the Owls followers, other clubs in similar situations where supporters are loyal to a local institution that has been part of their lives in many cases.

"I have absolute sympathy for the club's situation, as I do for all the clubs that over recent decades have faced collapse, or approached financial ruin, for causes separate from the fans themselves."

Questioned about whether the regulator could force an chairman to relinquish a club if they are deemed unsuitable, the regulator answered: "If your question is 'would we intervene in the final instance?', the answer is once we assemble the facts and understand the situation, we will."

But the chairman emphasized that requiring chairmen to relinquish clubs would be viewed as the ultimate measure and the authority would rather to work with them.

"Our least desirable course of action is begin intervening in an particular organization, an individual owner, without being in a position to cooperate with that owner to try and resolve the issues that the club's facing and the chairman's encountering," the regulator explained.

"However, realistically, when you examine the past of the game, over the recent generations there have been particular chairmen, a small minority, but particular people who have shown negligence in the way which they've been managing their clubs and ultimately don't wish to take responsibility for the future."

'If we get it wrong, extraordinary progress vanishes'

The regulator engaged officials from numerous teams to lay out the remit of the oversight body this week and insisted it was a "forward-thinking discussion" with a "substantial involvement" from the National League to the Premier League.

"It's a job that's actually really important, because should mistakes occur, if the sport makes errors, the significant advances achieved might evaporate swiftly," the chairman stated.

"Such an outcome is universally undesirable in the terms of English football is a major achievement - we must maintain momentum.

"There's an enormous amount of money flowing into the game and has been invested for the last 20 or 25 years, because there are no assurances it will continue to come into football, which is part of the rationale behind I think we have to take a really clear view on risk and of course, of the next two or three years."

Top Flight Apprehensions

The Premier League opposed the establishment of an oversight body because of apprehensions regarding adverse consequences on the elite division's competitive balance, but Kogan said: "I completely endorse the achievement and development as an economic entity of the elite league.

"I of all people understand the apprehension regarding damaging the Premier League as a premium product of this country. But concurrently, if you consult with top flight officials after today's meeting, they would have had a substantial amount of confidence -and, actually, they have been telling us in private they have a high level of reassurance."

Political Connections

The chairman continues to confront a "comprehensive investigation" by the public appointments commissioner after he acknowledged providing funds to the Labour Party in recent years.

The chairman donated money to Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport the politician's campaign, along with that of the now Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

"I have been entirely transparent regarding my previous political affiliation [with Labour], and that ideological connection terminated the day the official body endorsed my nomination," the chairman stated.

"I am no longer involved in any form of political activity."
