2026 Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is called an army, it feels they are staking their claim.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are far from new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. Yet, their prevalence has markedly increased in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an absolute deluge of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are bona fide Frog Games.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this trend, I undertook a detailed review into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a steady uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also apparent elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the wave in gaming seems particularly strong.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Honestly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a standout feature in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues enable a host of unique mechanics.

A number of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year so far.

Should these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be entering a true frog gaming renaissance.
